The July 28, 2008 issue of Time Magazine includes a letter to readers by managing editor Richard Stengel entitled "The Service Agenda."
In the letter Stengel notes that "it is a unique moment for the idea of national service," especially since we are in the midst of a presidential election in which both candidates have made the call for service a key component of their campaigns. To capitalize on this moment Stengel is co-chairing - along with Caroline Kennedy, Chair of America's Promise Alliance Alma Powell, President of Carnegie Corporation Vartan Gregorian, and CEO of AARP Bill Novelli - the ServiceNation Summit a "national bipartisan summit that will bring together hundreds of leading Americans to plan and lay out a bold blueprint on citizen service."
The NPCA has joined 100 other organizations on the Organizing Committee for the ServiceNation Summit, being held on September 11 and 12 in New York City. The summit seeks to bring together powerful political, community, and corporate leaders from around the country in support of creating opportunities for all Americans to serve our country and solve the critical issues at hand. Senators John McCain and Barack Obama have also been invited to a presidential forum focused on their ideas about the role of service in America. The ServiceNation Summit shares with the NPCA the common goal of increasing annually the number of Americans committing themselves to full time service both at home and abroad.
ServiceNation has embraced the MorePeaceCorps campaign and its goal of introducing legislation that will double the Peace Corps by 2011. Richard Stengel makes clear that "all the partners are keen to make the summit a place for not only dialogue but also action," by working with Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch on legislation to expand opportunities for volunteering and national service.
