In July a group of more than 20 RPCVs and friends got together on the Seattle coast to re-connect and reminisce about their service in Sri Lanka. The get-together was masterminded by four Seattle area RPCVs who met at least once a year for curry and catching up with each other. They toyed around with the idea of a reunion, eventually deciding to open the gathering to all Sri Lanka RPCVs.
According to Joe Terteling (Sri Lanka 84-86), who was one of the organizers, the event provided them with the opportunity to rekindle relationships with old batch mates and spark new relationships with fellow RPCVs. One RPCV even connected with a former student after 22 years of separation. The group talked while taking in the beautiful view, took a scenic boat trip, and enjoyed a dinner which was followed by bonfire (and delicious s'mores!).
But the most important take-away from the gathering was the deep connection attendees felt over their experiences. Terteling commented: "Perhaps most memorable were people's reflections during dinner on why, after so many decades and oceans away, their Peace Corps years in Sri Lanka still matter so deeply."
