Last year in response to inquiries from our supporters, NPCA created a resource on the status of state retirement credit for Peace Corps service. Rebecca Perkins (Senegal 04 – 06) is one of several RPCVs who is starting to use that resource as a catalyst for action!
Perkins says her interest in public policy – which has led her to internships from Amnesty International in Washington D.C. to the US Embassy in Vienna - is motivated by getting people involved in important causes, big and small. “I find myself again and again in organizing roles, as it provides a chance to reach out to new audiences, getting them to think about doing something good that they may not have thought of without that contact. Whether big or small, I think there is a huge energy in people to be involved in something greater than themselves…Why not harness that energy and empower citizens to create a stronger democracy?”
A former intern with the Legal Counsel for the New Hampshire House of Representatives, one of Rebecca’s current causes is to help introduce legislation that would bring her home state in line with other New England neighbors in allowing state employees to purchase retirement credit for Peace Corps service. As a first year student at Cornell Law School, she has also started to connect with some New York RPCVs interested in taking similar action on retirement credit.
"I love it – I love working with citizens to create change, and I just can’t seem to stay away!" For the Peace Corps community, that is welcome news. Thank you Rebecca!
